"Jardim da Manga"

| "Jardim da Manga" |
|
This was formerly the centre of one of three cloisters in the Santa Cruz Monastery. Legend has it that its name derives from the fact that King John III sketched its design on the sleeve (manga) of his doublet.
João de Ruão drafted the plan and made the bas-reliefs for the interior of the four cubicles or chapels. This is one of the earliest complete examples of Renaissance architecture in Portugal, its structure symbolising the Source of Life. |
