This is situated in the middle of the Avenida Sá da Bandeira, and was begun as part of an 1885 project for the urbanisation of the Quinta de Santa Cruz, which included a public walkway with gardens. These were entrusted to Prof. Júlio Henriques of the Botanic Garden. They were inaugurated in 1889, but only finished in 1928, after alterations by the landscape gardener Jacinto de Matos.
