New Fountain (Fonte Nova)

This was already in existence in 1137, when it was known as the Fonte dos Judeus (Jewish Fountain). Later it was rebuilt, and its present appearance, with elaborate Baroque ornamentation, dates from 1725.
The stairs surrounding it were completed in 1986.

This tower was part of the ancient city walls, and was known in medieval times as the Tower of the Prior of Ameal. It was extensively altered in the 16th century, but has changed little since then. Its present name comes from the fact that the poet António Nobre (1867-1900) lived there in the late 19th century.

Rebuilt in the 18th century, its Romanesque doorway dates from 1179. The Rococo altarpiece above the high altar is dated 1746. The chapel of St Mark has an altarpiece by João de Ruão from 1540.

The convent, which is near the Penedo da Saudade, was built for the Carmelite sisters in the 18th century.

Church of St Bartolomew (Igreja de São Bartolomeu)

Dating back to the 10th century, it was rebuilt in the 12th and 18th centuries. The interior has gilded Baroque altarpieces, particularly that above the high altar, from the 18th century, which includes a large painting of the martyrdom of the patron saint.

The college was founded in 1540, initially catering for poor clergy. Later the institution moved to the uptown area of the city.
