Academic Museum (Museu Académico)


The Academic Museum, which functions under the auspices of the University, aims to collect, preserve and publicise the social, artistic and cultural values of the student community. Its collections of academic dress and of photographs reveal the history of student life in Coimbra.

Its extensive holdings in different areas enable the museum to mount exhibitions on a variety of themes. Its documental collection has also proved useful for research into student life.
The first museum dedicated to university life was set up in 1951, based on an exhibition organised by the Students’ Union (the Associação Académica de Coimbra) and by the organising committee of the Queima das Fitas student festival in 1950. However, it was only in 1987 that the museum was given its own space in the Colégio de S. Jerónimo, its present home.
