Science Museum (Museu da Ciência)

In this space it is possible to get to know collections of scientific instruments of the University of Coimbra, as well as to conduct several experiments and activities that seek to involve the visitors.

The Museum of Science was distinguished by the Portuguese Association of Museology (APOM) with the awards for Best Educational Service and Best Multimedia Management Application, prizes that recognize the quality of the educational and interactive activities, as well as the project for Digital Museum, the largest database on scientific instruments and objects of natural history and ethnography of the country.
The Physics, Zoology, Mineralogy and Botany museums have been integrated in the Museum of Science of the University of Coimbra as galleries.

Permanent Exhibitions

PHYSICS GALLERY
In addition to the Chemistry Laboratory, one can also visit the eighteenth-century Physics Office. Its collection is one of the most remarkable in the world and it is located in a unique and characteristic environment of the eighteenth century.
Make a journey to the Physics world of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and get to know some of the most fascinating discoveries of science.

MINERALOGY AND GEOLOGY GALLERY
This gallery, probably the oldest of its kind to be formally founded in Europe, has a collection of 5,600 species.
This nucleus, a Section of the Museum of Natural History and neighboring the Zoology Museum, consists of a set of exhibition areas, where the José Bonifácio d’Andrade e Silva Gallery has particular interest, comprising minerals from all over the world, notably an 800- specimen collection, including precious gems organized according to the classifications of Strunz and Dana.
The Paul Choffat Room (Geological Cartography) presents different types of scales of cartographic representations of the national territory, being of particular interest the relief maps of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, as well as the support equipment for geological cartography. The Carlos Ribeiro Room (Rock Solid Portugal) comprises samples of the main national rocks, along with the representations of their use in everyday life objects.
Furthermore, the gallery also offers – in the hallway leading to the overseas gallery – the representation through fossil record of the main stages of life on earth over the last 600 million years.

ZOOLOGY GALLERY
This gallery boasts rich and varied collections that include species from almost all zoological groups.
Dating back to the eighteenth century, this museological nucleus is connected to the creation of the Faculty of Philosophy. With the development of zoology and other sciences, the masters of the time organized offices of collections of Natural History (zoology, botany, mineralogy, and geology) that supported practical teaching and research.
With the evolution of scientific research, especially regarding the study of the fauna of Portugal and former Portuguese colonies, the assets of this gallery were enriched with collections of species of different zoological groups.
BOTANY GALLERY
This gallery boasts a diversified collection, including various plant specimens, didactic models demonstrating the diversity of the shape and structure of plants, artifacts of plant origin, fossils, and scientific instruments.
In the permanent exhibition, “Plants and us”, one learns that, in addition to being present in our food, plants are constantly present in our daily life.
