The observatory carries out research and teaching in astronomy, and promotes knowledge of this field among the general public. It was created following the reforms of the Marquis of Pombal, a complicated process only successfully completed at the end of the 18th century. The original design for a majestic building was abandoned in September 1775, probably due to its high cost. Another building was erected in the Patio of the University in 1790.The setting up of the Observatory was of unquestionable value for the development of astronomical studies in Portugal. The first large observatory in the country, it demonstrated the contemporary urge to link the theoretical with the practical, thus bringing genuine advantages for science in Portugal.
The University Observatory functioned on its first site for nearly 150 years. In the early 1940s, the new plan for the University quarter involved clearing away the buildings which occupied the Patio, and the building of a more suitable observatory. In 1951, therefore, the Observatory moved to the Alto de Santa Clara, where it still teaches students, conducts research and publicises astronomy.
Over the years the Observatory has also made astronomical data available to the scientific and lay communities, and currently provides access to astronomical tables, solar images and an archive of stellar spectra. Pupil’s ticket € 0,75 |
